The unwritten rule at American bars is one to two dollars per drink for simple orders like draft beers and well spirits. For cocktails that require preparation, tip 18–20 per cent of the tab. If you are running a tab, tip on the total when you close out. Bartenders at craft cocktail bars who prepare complex drinks often appreciate 20 per cent or more. At open bars during events, tipping one or two dollars per drink is still expected since the bartender is not being paid by the host for each round.
