Knowing how much to tip at a hotel in Asia can save you from an awkward moment at the end of your visit. The short answer is 0–10 per cent, but the real answer depends on the quality of service, local customs, and whether a service charge is already included.

In Japan, hotel tipping is not practised. In Southeast Asia, tipping porters the equivalent of one to two dollars is common at international-chain hotels. In India, 50–100 rupees per bag and per night for housekeeping is appropriate. Many upscale Asian hotels add a service charge to the bill.
