Tipping customs in Asia differ dramatically from country to country. In Japan, tipping is not practised and may even be considered rude — exceptional service is simply the standard. In China, tipping is uncommon outside tourist-oriented venues and high-end hotels in major cities. South Korea follows a similar pattern. In contrast, Hong Kong and Singapore often add a 10 per cent service charge to restaurant bills. In Thailand, rounding up or leaving 20–50 baht is welcomed at sit-down restaurants. India typically expects 10 per cent if no service charge appears.
